The original use of the Hammock An informative article about how the hammock was originally used in the early 1900 s
Peruvian and Brazilian natives were the first people to make hammocks. They made them from the bark of a hammock tree and called them hamacas.

Hammocks once were used for beds by sailors aboard ship. They were made of pieces of heavy canvas three feet wide and six feet long. The ends of the canvas were attached to cords ties to hooks under the ship deck. The sailors took down the hammocks each morning, and rolled them up with the mattress inside. Then they stored the hammock bundle inside their lockers.

When a sailor died at sea, his body was wrapped in his hammock for burial. During World War II, most of the warships were equipped with bunks instead of hammocks. Merchant vessels also are usually equipped with bunks. In the summer, hammocks are hung on many porches and in yards. Neisha Bjorklund is the webmaster for www.luxuryhammocks.com.
